EDITOR'S NOTE
Grappling With AI
by Brandi Scardilli

The commemorative mug I ordered from the National Park ServiceIt’s the United States of America’s 250th birthday on July 4. As exciting as it is to be alive for this milestone, I’m having complicated feelings about the celebration of it. I wish we could be shouting about America250 from the rooftops under national leadership that values empathy and education. I wish we had a better standing on the world stage. I wish the bitter divisions inherent in our founding weren’t still plaguing us today.

I can have these birthday wishes all I want, but that doesn’t change reality: that there are a lot of downsides to living in the U.S. in 2026. But there are upsides too. The courts seem to be keeping our democracy intact. We’ve witnessed acts of bravery and compassion during times of cruelty. We’ve proven our resilience over and over again despite many obstacles. So let’s take a look at what the nation’s 250th birthday means to Information Today’s authors. Turn to the Table of Contents, where you'll find the articles on the theme marked with an American flag.

Happy reading,
Brandi Scardilli
