EDITOR'S NOTE
Grappling With AI
by Brandi Scardilli
It’s 2026, and the general consensus seems to be that AI is here to stay—but more and more, people are urging caution and measured approaches. Kashyap Kompella’s feature digs into the dangers of a lack of AI governance (page 18). Amber Boedigheimer’s Legal Issues column raises awareness of the issues AI companies need to address (page 22). And Marcella Lees’ feature recommends ways digital archivists can leverage AI in their work while being mindful of ethical implications (page 26).
Let’s end this note on a positive, though: Take a look at Anthony Aycock’s feature on page 13 to celebrate National Reading Month this March. I’ve heard often from librarians over the years that there’s nothing wrong with saying libraries are about books. The catchphrase that they’re about more than books is true, of course, but fostering a love of reading has always been and will always be central to their mission. When things are tough, you can always take respite in a good book.
Happy reading,
