Summer Movie (Streaming) Season

The summer movie season is upon us, and I’ll be venturing out to the theater to see just two— Jurassic World: Dominion and Thor: Love and Thunder. Growing up, I was at the movies almost every week during the summer. What changed? Movie studios no longer making as many midbudget movies. Ticket and concession stand prices going sky-high. Peak TV transforming the media landscape. The rise of commercial streaming services. All of these are culprits outside the scope of this magazine. Do you know what we can talk about, though? Library streaming services! They won’t be able to offer the next big blockbuster any time soon, but instead, these services provide access to hidden gems and quality movies and TV shows that people can watch to forget about the summer heat. Justin Hoenke reviews biblio+, the newest service on the market (page 14), and I explore how libraries make the most of access challenges, using Bridgerton as an example (page 17).
No matter your summer plans, whether you’ll be home on your couch with your library login or at the movies with Thor and Jane Foster, I hope you stay healthy—and entertained!
