EDITOR'S NOTE
Sunny Days
by Brandi Scardilli
For the July/August issue, I like when we’re able to strike a light tone to match the general mood—it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the days are long and often sunny, and cookouts and beach days are the norm for a lot of people. But there are some pretty serious topics in these pages. What else can we expect from life in 2025?
We’re living in a time when the loneliness epidemic is making the library more vital than ever for vulnerable populations such as senior citizens (page 13). When the presidential administration is refusing to confront climate change, thus impacting disaster recovery efforts (page 16). When PBS may be defunded, despite its decades of well-documented benefits to children (page 19). When the president fires someone for (allegedly) speaking truth to power that AI shouldn’t train on copyrighted material without permission (page 21).
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Justin Hoenke asks Stephen Abram to share his proudest moments working in libraries (page 4). Phil Shapiro pens a love letter to Anythink libraries (page 6). Thomas Pack profiles the Investopedia financial literacy resource (page 7). Michelle Fitzhugh-Craig gives readers a peek into her schoolbag for the fall (page 30). And more!
Happy reading,
