Summer Vacation

July calls to mind that joyous anthem of summer break, Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out for Summer” (or, if you’re like me, you go right to High School Musical 2’s “What time is it? / Summertime! / It’s our vacation”). Whether or not you get time off from school or work, summer can certainly be a time for extra rest and relaxation. Maybe you’ll go to the movies (check out page 4 for Anthony Aycock’s take on some classic library scenes in film) or join a book club (Jessica Hilburn has some great tips for how to run one that’s customized for individual libraries on page 15).
You can go on a vacation, but those cost money—take a look at “Living Standard Metrics: Defining a Basic Economic Life” (page 28) to see what’s taken into account when studying living wages.
The federal government slows down (but, hopefully, doesn’t shut down) in the summer, but we’ll probably still be talking about the Mueller report. George Pike digs into its comments on communications applications on page 26.
Of course, just because school’s out doesn’t mean we stop learning. Dave Shumaker kicks off a planned interview series with info industry leaders by talking to Matti Shem Tov and Oren Beit-Arie, who are CEO and chief strategy officer of ProQuest, respectively (page 12). And Kenneth Evans looks at two portals that info pros can use to help support math researchers (page 18).
We’ll see you in September. In the meantime, “School’s out / Scream and shout!”
