Vol. 7, No. 4 September 2000
by Linda J. Lewis
Presents a very favorable review of USA Explorer ($30) from DK
Interactive Learning of New York, NY (888). Requires a minimum of
Windows 95 and a 486/33MHz computer for the PC version; and a
68LC040 25 MHz with system 7.0 for Macintosh; both require 7MB of
hard drive space, 8MB RAM, and a 640x480 color display. Describes
the program as a highly interactive multimedia program that uses 500
pop-up screens, videos, animations, sound clips, hypertext, and
music to encourage children to explore the history, customs, and
culture of the U.S. while increasing their map-reading, language
arts, and critical-thinking skills. Says that the publisher
recommends it for ages five to nine, but feels that students through
age 12 would benefit from the program. Calls it outstanding. Rated
five on a scale of one to five.
Includes one screen display and a scorecard.
