Information Today
Vol. 41 No. 2 — March 2024
EDITOR'S NOTE
Reasons to Celebrate
by Brandi Scardilli

This issue, Information Today features the anniversaries of two info industry mainstays. First, The Library Corporation (TLC) has been in business for 50 years as of 2024. Justin Hoenke spoke with co-founder Annette Harwood Murphy about her legacy in helping make the company so successful, and he shares what TLC is doing to mark the occasion (page 16). Second, influential essay collection The Gutenberg Elegies, which critiqued the rise of digital media, is now 30 years old. Anthony Aycock examines the book from a 2024 lens, discovering what is still valuable about it in the internet age (page 19).

Here are two more pieces of good news. The European Union has implemented the Digital Markets Act, a regulation that discourages the anticompetitive practices of and encourages accountability for the major technology companies. Kelly LeBlanc offers a primer on the regulation, sharing what’s expected of these companies as it comes into force on March 6 (page 14). In the Insights on Content section, David Haden examines the heartening state of long-term information storage (page 26).

In Database Review, Mick O’Leary turns his attention to two purveyors of happiness studies: the World Happiness Report and Greater Good Magazine (page 24).
