| EDITOR'S NOTES Happy Summer, Happy New Year
 by Kathy Dempsey

Another summer, another CIL Buyer's Guide. Hard to believe it's that
time of year again. This is the perfect time to sit down and peruse our directory
and think about what to buy with your 2005 budget. Rather than seeing this
perusal as work, think of it as a shopping spree! Make a new wish list of library
equipment, content, and services that you'd love to have.
And speaking of shopping (as I so often am), this issue carries the third
in our four-part series of Helping You Buy articles. This one revisits our
2003 series that explained and rated integrated library systems. Pamela Cibbarelli,
who has her finger on the pulse of the ILS marketplace, has once again surveyed
all the vendors and compiled a report for us. You'll value this handy midyear
update and the at-a-glance chart that can tell you which products have which
features. As a bonus, at the end of this Helping You Buy article, Cibbarelli
has shared a selection of new ILS product ratings from her latest Directory
of Library Automation Software, Systems, and Services, just coming off
the presses now. Take a sneak peek!
And speaking of bonuses, you'll be pleased to learn that this year's Buyer's
Guide listings will be posted on CIL's Web site! See page 14 to
learn more, or rush right to https://www.infotoday.com/cilmag.
Here's something you might find interesting: This is, in many ways, the end
of 2004 for me. All the queries for this year are in, and all the articles
have been chosen. As you read this in July, we'll be picking all the issue
themes for 2005. (Any suggestions? E-mail them to me immediately!) New themes
and query deadlines will be published in our September issue, and they should
be on our Web site by late August. Details for submission are always online
at https://www.infotoday.com/cilmag/faq.shtml. C'mon, send in your article ideas
  for 2005!
