Web authoring and design for librarians — If you have the basics down but want to expand, look to this new guide
by Gwen Gregory

Presents a very favorable review of "Designing Web Interfaces to Library Services and Resources" ($32) by Kristen L. Garlock and Sherry Piontek, published in 1999 by the American Library Association. Says that the 103-page book targets Web interface designers who have already mastered HTML skills. Notes that the topics covered include the use of color, recommending no more than four colors per Web site. Reports that designing for accessibility is also discussed in detail and says that practical tips are offered. Indicates that an explanation of the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative is also included, as a possible future source of standards. Adds that the book stresses the value of involving users in the design process, to avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes. Calls the book an excellent addition to any library Web author's collection. Includes one sidebar.
