It took a while, but DVD-audio is here — It has greater clarity than CD-audio, but can we truly appreciate it?
by Péter Jacsó

CD/DVD COMMENTARIES column examines some of the issues associated with the introduction of DVD-Audio. Says that, compared to current CD technology, DVD-Audio offers a four-fold difference in frequency, a 1.5-fold difference in sampling depth, and a sound improvement factor of six. Notes, however, that the technology is likely to be priced too high to appeal to the mass market for some time. Says that DVD-Audio players are expected to cost about $800 when they are introduced next year. Adds that six speakers and a new receiver are likely requirements for realizing the full potential of the new players. Questions whether most people will be able to distinguish the difference in audio quality. Indicates that Super Audio CD is another new technology under development that will offer the higher sampling and bit rates of DVD-Audio and may also accommodate a version that could be played on current CD players.
