Intranets 2001 Conference: The Year of Control

Although the initial buzz and excitement of intranets has cooled, the machine works on. Intranet practitioners recognize that the machine requires constant care and feeding, occasional overhauls, and upgrades. Online Inc.'s Intranets 2001 Conference and Expo [www.intranets2001.com] provided a forum for intranet workers and visionaries alike to consider how best to optimize the "machine." The conference attracted a solid contingent of committed intranet professionals who traded tips and techniques and tapped into the latest product news. Jean DeMatteo and Howard McQueen compiled a program packed with demonstrations of working intranets, and sessions focused on everything from strategies for fostering content creation to designing better interfaces. 
 

Getting Control—Content Management Solutions
Jim Bair, senior VP, Strategy Partners International, shared his insights into the content management market and flagged a resurgence of interest in search technologies. It was interesting to note that a number of new players on the trade show floor, including Fast Search, Quiver, Antarcti.ca, and Linguo Motors, feature some aspect of search and information retrieval. Bair discussed the major risks in selecting a content management solution and emphasized that decisions about content management must be made—most of us cannot wait and see. The challenge is to identify "what is safe to buy."
