PublishOne is currently piloting its service with more than 20 publishers, including market-research firms such as Yankelovich Partners, Inc., market-data providers such as VNU’s Trade Dimensions, newsletters such as Release 1.0: Esther Dyson’s Monthly Report, and American Lawyer Media, Inc., a legal journalism and information company.
“What’s compelling about the Publish-One service is that it allows us to leverage our content in ways that were never before possible. We custom-tailor existing offerings for specific markets, slice and dice the data we sell, and even design totally new products for targeted market segments,” said Regina Anderson, executive vice president of Yankelovich Partners. “In our early work with PublishOne, we’ve seen how we can use the service to expand into new markets and generate additional revenue by leveraging the power of the Internet, without compromising the integrity of our data or risking its security.”
“PublishOne is exclusively focused on helping business-information publishers transform their businesses for success in the digital world,” said Kirk Loevner, PublishOne founder and CEO. “Our pilot partners have been invaluable in helping us design and build a set of services to meet the specific needs of the business-information market—services that build on powerful digital rights management technology.”
According to the company, PublishOne integrates advanced DRM and protection technologies from industry leaders InterTrust Technologies Corp. and Adobe Systems, Inc. so publishers can securely sell content online without the requirements of building or maintaining their own IT infrastructure. The PublishOne service uses a Web-based interface to deliver a suite of powerful features to publishers, including content encryption and hosting, secure commerce transactions, subscription management, customer support, and comprehensive online reporting. In addition, the service enables a powerful pass-along (or “superdistribution”) sales channel for publishers through e-mail distribution. The publisher’s content is protected throughout the entire process.
The initial release of the PublishOne service supports both single-issue and subscription products. The subscription-management features of the service include tools to handle subscription renewals, subscriber correspondence and management, and sales reporting. The PublishOne service will be available in Q4 2000.
