Bell & Howell Information and Learning to Become ProQuest

Bell & Howell Information and Learning has announced that ProQuest, Inc. is the name for the new company that will be created when Bell & Howell’s two information access businesses are established as a separate company later this year.

In January, Bell & Howell announced plans to create two new companies to maximize the growth prospects of its business units. The new company, ProQuest, will comprise the companies currently known as Bell & Howell Information and Learning (formerly UMI) and Bell & Howell Publishing Services, and will be led by Jim Roemer, the current Bell & Howell chairman, president, and CEO. The new company’s headquarters will be in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Since the early 1990s, the name ProQuest has been applied to a suite of electronic databases serving the library and educational community. Today the well-known ProQuest Web-based online service is available to almost two-thirds of the U.S.’s 15 million college students, attracting nearly 2 million page views per day via the Internet, according to the company.

“To our library and education customers, the name ProQuest stands for quality, innovation, authoritative content, and timeliness. These are valuable attributes that will extend to the new company as a whole. We believe that the name ProQuest will resonate with customers across all markets we serve,” said Roemer. “Under this new name, we will continue our commitment to serving the ‘quest’ for valuable and premium information by automotive and powersports dealers and manufacturers, libraries, educational institutions, and other customers.”

Joe Reynolds, president and CEO of Bell & Howell Information and Learning, said: “The name ProQuest is already familiar to our customers, and is recognized as a premium brand around the world. We look forward to extending its application more broadly as we embark on this new and exciting era in our company’s history.”
