CNN becomes first U.S. beta test site for Sony/EDS digital asset management system

Announces that CNN will serve as the initial beta test site in the U.S. for the Sony/EDS digital asset management and archiving system, comprised of the Sony PetaSite mass storage library, Sony DTF tape drives, EDS Media Vault software, and Avalon Archive Manager (AAM) software. Says Media Vault is a scalable client/server approach to all media types, and AAM supplies a file level interface for robotic data-tape libraries. Adds the DTF tape drive is based on Sony's Digital Betacam technology, and is one of the fastest drives commercially available. Notes that CNN is evaluating several different approaches to the digital archiving and repurposing of 700,000 news footage video segments, and plans to digitize some 70,000 hours of material over the next several years.
