Encyclopaedia Britannica launches multi-platform CD-ROM


Announces that Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. will release a stand-alone version of Britannica CD 98 Standard Edition ($75) with updated information for 1998. Says the single CD-ROM will include the entire text of the 32-volume encyclopedia, with 72,000 articles, 4,000 images, and 1,200 maps, and offers natural language, keyword, and Boolean searching capabilities. Notes the product is a hybrid that is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems, and adds it will also be available in a networked version for numerous servers. Indicates the stand-alone product will also include the Spectrum and Compass features found in the multimedia release, providing a visual outline of human knowledge in 12 classifications, and extensive geographic and statistical information for 190 countries.
