| Adobe Systems, Inc. has announced the release ofthe Adobe Acrobat eBook
Reader 2.1, which features Adobe CoolType font-rendering technology, a
two-page layout feature, and a built-in interactive dictionary. Adobe Acrobat
eBook Reader 2.1 forWindows as well as the Macintosh beta version are available
for download at no charge from the Adobe.com Web site at http://www.adobe.com/products/ebookreader/main.html.
The Windows version is also available from barnesandnoble.com’s eBookStore
at http://www.bn.com or from Amazon.com’s
e-Book store at http://www.amazon.com.
"The Acrobat eBook Reader is the only tool on the market that gives
Mac and Windows users an interactive, graphically rich reading experience
with the ability to print and navigate through the Web—all within the same
interface," said Michael Looney, Adobe’s senior director of eBooks.
According to the announcement, the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader 2.1 offers
new features that dramatically improve the end-user’s e-book experience.
With Adobe CoolType technology, consumers can view the font of any Adobe
PDF-based e-book at a variety of resolutions and select the most pleasing
to read on their LCD screen. Users can also click on any word and the new
interactive dictionary appears with a definition. Additionally, where the
publisher grants permission, users can lend their e-book selections between
Acrobat eBook Readers.
"The Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader provides a rich platform for digital
books of all genres by including print capability, video and search features,
and links directly to the Web," said Sue Kervorkian, an analyst with IDC.
"In addition, it gives both Macintosh and Windows users the flexibility
to access a growing library of digital books on a variety of devices, as
well as in printed and spoken formats."
