A World of Possibilities

Many of my favorite characters are readers. Matilda Wormwood from Matilda started reading Charles Dickens at 4 years old. Cher Horowitz from Clueless reads one non-school book per week. Rachel Green and Joey Tribbiani from Friends bond over Little Women and The Shining. (I could go on, but I won’t.) The point is, readers are everywhere. This month, we’re celebrating book culture with “Lord, Give Me a Sign(ing): Do’s and Don’ts When Meeting Authors,” by Anthony Aycock (page 1), and two reports from BookExpo (starting on page 10). Brendan Howley explores how reading can be a link to freedom in The Razor’s Edge (page 13). On that note, Exact Editions’ Thomas Rodenby shares the importance of digital access to reading materials in Insider’s Perspective (page 23).
It’s not just reading that can be transformative. Jessica Hilburn gives us a thought-provoking and powerful window into how the lack of access to pop culture can affect rural populations. See “Keeping Up With the Urbanites” on page 1.
