A Salute to Summer
by Barbara Brynko

The July/August issue always causes me some angst. I do my best to add as many articles as I can about industry news and trends because it’s our only combined issue for the year, and I want to give you plenty to read … you know, lots of added value.

In this issue, we’re sharing a sneak peek at David Shumaker’s new book, The Embedded Librarian: Innovative Strategies for Taking Knowledge Where It’s Needed. Our pick focuses on special library settings, especially corporations, nonprofits, and government. Shumaker slices and dices statistics, surveys, and case studies that point to the value of the embedded librarian in each of these sectors. Yes, embedded librarians become the human linchpins for an organization. In fact, one embedded librarian described her role as helping to “make everyone in the company smarter.”

It also seemed like the perfect time to update you on some important legal cases that are having an impact on the information industry. “Facebook Wins Landmark Case” on page 1 highlights the perils of unauthorized data sharing, no matter how an entrepreneur spins his intent. Likewise, “The Verdict in the GSU Case” basically set the parameters for what’s considered fair use and what isn’t. But stay tuned. An appeal awaits.

And Thane Kerner, president and CEO of Silverchair Holdings, Inc., offers his perspectives on the company’s strategic game plan. After the recent sale of Silverchair Learning Systems, he’s ready for the next growth phase, which he discusses in “Kerner: Silverchair’s Sterling Game Plan.”

But that’s just for starters. So, safe travels, enjoy the summer, use sunscreen, and see you in September.
