A day in the life of an editor is all about reading, from skimming incoming news and reports to evaluating article proposals and editorial submissions to poring over galleys and page proofs. And at the end of the day, when I don’t think I can read another thing, I’ve found that firing up my Kindle has rekindled my love of reading. I can see why U.S. ebook sales are up nearly 146% from March 2010 to March 2011.
What’s not to love about the e-reader format as a welcome departure from the daily grind of office desktops, laptops, and small mobile devices? E-readers are compact and portable, yet they have a screen that’s big enough to read text easily. Although I could check email on my Kindle, I’ve decided to dedicate my Kindle just to leisure reading. I now juggle several books at once, never needing to remember where I left off on each one or having to deal with a growing stack o’ novels on the bookshelf. Sure, it seems ironic that the editor of a print publication is advocating ebooks, but hey, there’s enough room for more than one format in the marketplace.
For our combined July/August issue, we have a healthy portion of summer reading for you. First, there’s an article on the burgeoning state of the ebook industry, from e-readers to licensing and more, beginning on page 1. And in keeping with the summer reading theme, we have a profile of Peter Suber, the father of open access (OA), who offers his insights into the OA revolution. Then, our CEO series continues with a profile of Ken Bado, the new CEO of MarkLogic Corp., who shares part of his corporate game plan for the next phase of company growth. And there’s plenty more too.
