Kaiser Permanente Moves to Ovid Online

Ovid Technologies, Inc. has announced that Kaiser Permanente, America’s largest nonprofit health maintenance organization, has contracted with Ovid to provide its nationwide network of group-practice physicians and medical researchers with access to a wide range of online medical research tools. Users at Kaiser’s facilities in 12 states and the District of Columbia will have access to five key bibliographic resources including MEDLINE and HealthStar; Ovid’s Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews; and nearly 100 full-text medical journals in Journals@Ovid.

“We are very pleased that Kaiser Permanente has chosen Ovid,” said Diane Koen, Ovid’s vice president of sales. “With this contract, Kaiser will offer its users a selection of key content that—when you put it all together under Ovid—forms a truly aggregated and integrated solution for both researchers and end-user clinicians.”

The databases, full text, and summary content that Kaiser Permanente ( has selected feature millions of links between resources. According to the announcement, the links provide a degree of integration that is unique to the Ovid platform. For example, Kaiser’s Ovid users will be able to link from MEDLINE search results to full-text journal articles, or from the references in full text to abstracts and citations in bibliographic databases or to other full-text articles. All of this linking and retrieval occurs within the Ovid search environment, with a single browser window and a single interface.

“We’re really excited to be offering Ovid nationwide to our providers,” said Sara Pimental, director of library services at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco. “Ovid’s powerful MEDLINE implementation, integrated with links to full text and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews, puts a wonderful library of information at our users’ fingertips, and they can access that library whether they’re at home, in the office, or at the point of care. Expanding our Ovid offerings dovetails nicely with our effort to put a PC on every provider’s desktop.”

According to the announcement, Kaiser Permanente is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit health maintenance organization. Founded in 1945, it is a group practice prepayment program with headquarters in Oakland, California. Kaiser Permanente serves the healthcare needs of 7.4 million voluntarily enrolled members in 12 states and the District of Columbia.
