Fac-Back-OPAC: An Open Source Interface to Your Library System
The new Fac-Back-OPAC (a faceted backup OPAC) is built on code that was written earlier this year. It represents a convergence of two trends: decoupling discovery tools from the traditional ILS and using open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology to meet our needs. The authors call it “one of the canonical examples of the next generation of OPACs coming to the market.”

Dreaming of a Better ILS
Lots of people dream about what they’d want in a “new and improved” ILS. CIL asked this author to put the question to a number of library tech experts, then study their responses. Here she reports on the wishes they all have in common and the dreams of the individuals.

Plug Your Users Into Library Resources With OpenSearch Plug-Ins
To bring the library catalog and other online resources right into users’ workspace, this tech librarian learned to build and use OpenSearch plug-ins. He explains how an OpenSearch description document can allow other programs (like Web browsers) to integrate elements of a search engine into their interfaces. It makes searching from the library’s page easier for users.
