A Pearson Digital Learning Success Story

Winlock Junior/Senior High School
Winlock, Washington
(Pearson Digital Learning NovaNet)

Winlock Junior/Senior High School is located in rural Washington between Olympia and Portland. Students primarily use NovaNET® in the evening for alternative students who wish to earn their Washington State high school diploma. More than 40 students take part in the evening program. NovaNET comprises 90 percent of the evening students’ curriculum. The junior and senior high schools also use NovaNET during the day for credit retrieval and remediation. Many of the students who are finding success with NovaNET have not been successful in regular classrooms.

In the Instructor's Own Words

Todd Dahlestead, Winlock Junior/Senior High School

I enjoy reading positive stories about NovaNET and its users. I have one that I feel is worth telling. I run an alternative school that uses NovaNET for about 90 percent of the curriculum. Yesterday Charity Goodman, a former student who graduated last year, stopped in to visit. As we caught up on our summers, the conversation shifted to employment opportunities. Charity told me that she had to take basic skills tests at three different establishments before they would even consider her as an applicant. She scored 100 percent on two and 97 percent on another.

Charity said that the math questions were exactly what she had learned using NovaNET. She admitted that she would not have had a clue if it were not for the instruction she got from the system.

She dropped out of school at age 15 to give birth and get married. Charity came back to our school last year as the mother of 3 and still married to the same man. Without NovaNET she would not have a high school diploma. She would also not have passed the basic skills test that helped her earn a full-time job. Charity’s husband now plans on coming to our program to pick up his GED.

NovaNET may not be the answer for everyone, but it is for so many. So let’s continue to help young people better their lives through education.

P.S. Yesterday, I had a student improve his test scores so dramatically after one year on NovaNET that he told me he could not sleep because his self-esteem was too high. I’ll take that kind of insomnia any day!
