Story
Kelly Elementary School
Carlsbad, California
(Pearson Digital Learning
SuccessMaker)
District Profile
Kelly Elementary, part
of Carlsbad Unified School District, serves over 600 students in Kindergarten
through sixth grade. It is located in a middle class area of central Carlsbad.
Goals
Challenging Every Student
Carlsbad Unified School
District’s goal for all students enrolled in the district at least three
years is to perform at or above grade level in basic subjects. Kelly Elementary
has a school goal to improve student achievement in reading and mathematics
by providing basic skills reinforcement for all students and challenging
material for honor students.
The Plan
The Right Combination
of Courses
Kelly Elementary implemented
SuccessMaker® in 1988 to help reach its goals. The individually-directed
instruction provided by the interactive courseware allows them to serve
the needs of a wide variety of students. Students in grades 3 through 6
work on the curriculum for 30 minutes, three times a week, in the school’s
34-station lab. Students in grade 2 have the opportunity to practice once
a week and even first graders have the opportunity to visit the lab on
occasion.
Kelly educators use a combination
of courses to help students build complex reading skills and to ensure
that all students are working on challenging material. When students exceed
grade level performance on foundations reading, they are advanced to courses
that require more critical thinking. Student progress is carefully monitored
so that there is continuous improvement in achievement.
A former Kelly Elementary
lab manager, Lynn Saggart, created a correlation of Reading Adventures
(a higher level reading course) to the California STAR (Standardized Testing
and Reporting) reading test. Teachers use the reading course to prepare
students for the test in the spring. The lab is also open after school
for students who would like extra practice. Motivational programs and bulletin
boards keep the students on target.
