Royal Society of Chemistry Sells Chemical Business NewsBase to Engineering Information, Inc.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Chemistry, Ltd. have announced the sale of their Chemical Business NewsBase (CBNB) and the associated Focus newsletter series to Engineering Information, Inc. (Ei), a U.S.-based and fully owned subsidiary of Elsevier Science. The RSC wishes to concentrate its publishing activities in products for the search community; Ei sees CBNB as a valuable database to further expand its activities in industrial research and development markets.

CBNB, an abstracts database, was launched by the RSC in 1985. It has been developed into a database of worldwide chemical business news and information, and is available on all major hosts and on CD-ROM. Ei intends to maintain the current distribution strategy but will also explore additional distribution channels for CBNB.

Ei's president and CEO Martin Tanke said: "Ei has been most successful in distributing databases through its innovative Village products. Adding CBNB will enable us to expand our Internet-based services in the area of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry."

Robert Welham, the RSC's director of publishing, said: "The RSC has developed in CBNB a product of high quality and excellent reputation. With Ei, CBNB now has the opportunity to go forward in an operation specializing in business services."
