Information Today, Inc. Unveils Two New Books

Information Today, Inc. (ITI) has announced the publication of The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search Engines Can't See, by Chris Sherman and Gary Price. ITI has also announced the release of The Quintessential Searcher: The Wit and Wisdom of Barbara Quint.

The Invisible Web
Sherman and Price estimate that 80 percent or more of the authoritative information accessible over the Internet is invisible to search engines, and thus not readily available to the millions of computer users who use the Web for research. According to Sherman and Price, content-rich databases from universities, libraries, associations, businesses, and governments are appearing on Web servers around the world at a staggering rate, but the current generation of search engines can reveal little or nothing about the data they contain. The phenomenon has been referred to as the "Invisible Web," and it is a major obstacle for online searchers.

According to the announcement, The Invisible Web is the first handbook and directory for information users who wish to utilize Invisible Web resources systematically in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of their online research. In this book, Sherman and Price—two of the world's leading Invisible Web experts—describe the scope and background of the problem; introduce readers to essential sites and sources; and offer practical tips, techniques, and analysis. The Web directory that the authors have created to support the book (http://www.invisibleweb.net) provides updates, news, and links to over 1,000 Invisible Web resources.

Sherman is president of Searchwise, a Boulder, Colorado-based Web consulting firm, and is associate editor of SearchEngineWatch.com. A frequent contributor to Information Today, Online, EContent, and other information industry journals, he has researched and written about search engines since 1994.

Price is a library and information consultant based in suburban Washington, DC, and a regular contributor to Searcher magazine. From 1995 through April 2001, he was a reference librarian at the Virginia campus of George Washington University in Ashburn, Virginia. He continues to serve as a consultant to the university.

The Quintessential Searcher
The Quintessential Searcher: The Wit and Wisdom of Barbara Quint is a collection of many of Quint's most memorable quotes from Searcher, Information Today, Online, Wilson Library Bulletin, and other library and information industry publications.

According to the announcement, Quint, editor of Searcher magazine, is one of the world's most famous online searchers and is widely acknowledged as the most creative, controversial, and influential writer to emerge from the online information industry. Whether chastising database providers about unacceptable fees, interfaces, and updates; recounting the ills visited on the world by computer makers; or inspiring librarians to achieve greatness, her voice is consistently original and compelling. In The Quintessential Searcher, librarian, writer, and Internet trainer Marylaine Block has gathered hundreds of humorous, insightful, and politically incorrect quotations for the enjoyment of Quint's many fans.
