Spring Ahead

March. For most people, it’s the month to celebrate a few notable events: St. Patrick’s Day, daylight saving time, and even the first day of spring. Me? It’s time for the Computers in Libraries (CIL) conference and a chance to check out the latest tools, trending services, and emerging players in the library market.
So when it came time to put the finishing touches on this issue of Information Today, I wanted to make sure that there was an intriguing mix of library-related features and articles to pique the interests of librarians and information professionals alike.
For starters, our front-page features include an up-close-and-personal interview with Clifford Lynch, noted CIL keynoter and executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information, who offers insights on the challenges confronting the library market today. We also explore the value-added services that the New Jersey State Library has initiated via a special grant to provide computer-literacy classes for the state’s job seekers. We’ve also added updates on new products and services, from ebrary (p. 31) and Wowbrary (p. 30) to entrepreneur Pinar Erzin (p. 13), who has taken the sales and marketing services for global academic and professional publishers to an all-new level. Tech-lovers can also check out a few new arrivals in Tools of the Trade (p. 23).
And there’s plenty more to keep you in the know from cover to cover, whether it’s an update on the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas (in case you weren’t able to attend) or an update on the controversial Elsevier boycott. There’s even a firsthand look at Amazon’s Kindle Fire, just in case you haven’t had a chance to test-drive one yet in person.
