|Documentum, Inc., a provider of enterprise content management (ECM),
has announced that it has acquired privately held Boxcar Software. This
acquisition news was announced in conjunction with Documentum's fourth
quarter and fiscal 2001 financial results.
Based in Boston, Boxcar provides standards-based, next-generation technology
for content aggregation and content distribution. Documentum plans to integrate
Boxcar's technology with the Documentum platform by the second quarter
of this year.
According to the announcement, with this acquisition Documentum provides
the most comprehensive set of content creation, personalization, management,
and delivery capabilities. Examples include aggregation, application integration,
authoring, collaboration, distribution, transformation, and Web publishing.
Content aggregation is the automated gathering of any type of content,
from any source, either inside or outside a company's firewalls, including
Web sites, public folders, file systems, and legacy applications. Content
distribution (known as "syndication" in the media and publishing industries)
is the automated distribution of any type of content, in any format to
any destination. Companies can choose to push content to specific target
audiences, or recipients can specify preferences for content, format, timing,
and delivery method.
The combination of Documentum and Boxcar's technology will enable companies
to gather all types of content from disparate sources; integrate it with
other enterprise content; manage and personalize the content; then securely
deliver and distribute it, in multiple formats, to multiple audiences.
With the addition of the Boxcar technology, Documentum says it is the first
and only vendor to offer a fully integrated, standards-based ECM solution
that spans the entire content management value chain, from creation through
management to delivery.
Boxcar Software makes content exchange software that enables both the
aggregation and distribution of business-critical content between and among
businesses and their suppliers, distributors, partners, customers, and
employees. The company was founded in 1999, and its management and technology
teams have extensive experience in Internet infrastructure software, with
a focus on Java technology.
