SilverPlatter to Make New Databases Available on Both CD-ROM and the Web

SilverPlatter Information, Inc. has announced that the EMBASE Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) database will soon be available on CD-ROM and via the Internet. SilverPlatter has also announced three H.W. Wilson databases that will be available on CD and on the Internet: Wilson Applied Science & Technology Full Text, Wilson Library Literature & Information Sciences Full Text, and Wilson Art Full Text.

The EBM database is a subset of Elsevier Science’s EMBASE, a comprehensive pharmacological and biomedical database renowned for extensive indexing of drug information. The new EBM product is designed to meet the needs of those requiring access to proven clinical information. EMBASE Evidence Based Medicine will allow researchers and clinicians to formulate a clear clinical question from a patient’s problem; search the literature or relevant clinical articles; evaluate the evidence for its validity and usefulness; and implement useful findings in clinical practice.

According to the announcement, the database is available only from SilverPlatter. It will be updated quarterly and includes more than 400,000 records from journals, papers, presentations, and conference proceedings from around the world.

“Clinical researchers will appreciate the EMBASE Evidence Based Medicine data in SilverPlatter’s easy-to-use SPIRS interface,” said Kristen Burch, Elsevier product manager.

The EMBASE EBM database will also be SilverLinker-enabled, which means that users will be able to link from the bibliographic citation to the article if the institution subscribes to that publication, or link to document delivery services or interlibrary loan (ILL). The product will also make use of the EMTREE Thesaurus, which makes searching the database for relevant material easier.

Applied Science & Technology
The Wilson Applied Science & Technology Full Text database, which will soon be available from SilverPlatter, contains full text from more than 90 periodicals dating from January 1997.

The database provides indexing from October 1983 and abstracting of periodicals from March 1993.

Subjects covered range from acoustics, aeronautics, artificial intelligence, chemistry, engineering, geology, marine technology, mathematics, oceanography, optical computing, physics, robotics, textile industry and fabrics, transportation, waste management, and more.

The database will be updated monthly on both CD-ROM and the Internet.

The bibliographic database indexes feature articles; interviews; reviews of films, books, and articles; bibliographies; exhibition listings; reproductions of works of art; notices of competitions and awards; and editorials and letters to the editor of reference value.

Special features of this database include title enhancements for articles with ambiguous titles, indexes of reproductions of works of art even if they are not accompanied by text, and indexes of illustrations of up to 10 works of art accompanying each article.
