XanEdu, McGraw-Hill Sign New, Comprehensive Agreement

Bell & Howell Co. and its newest division, XanEdu, have announced the signing of a comprehensive licensing and distribution agreement with McGraw-Hill Higher Education, a business unit of The McGraw-Hill Companies. Recognized as a groundbreaking strategic alliance, according to the announcement, the agreement brings together two innovative and respected leaders in the higher education content marketplace. Under the terms of the agreement, McGraw-Hill Higher Education will integrate XanEdu products and tools into its textbooks and Web sites.

XanEdu delivers online content and course-ware products to college students and educators. In contrast with other general reference or research publishers, XanEdu’s focus is course-centric, curriculum-aligned, and designed to provide extensive customization tools. XanEdu products offer a comprehensive repository of information, accessing over 3,500 full-text publications and millions of cross-relational curriculum materials along with hundreds of thousands of original works.

Ed Stanford, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education, said: “XanEdu’s exceptional content and sophisticated search protocols make the company’s products valuable and important for our customers. Their ease and convenience of use bring a value-added dimension of customer convenience and support. We look forward to a productive and exciting partnership that will provide a range of exclusive advantages to the higher education community.”

According to the announcement, McGraw-Hill Higher Education is the world’s second-largest publisher of college textbooks and electronic materials. The company is an innovative market leader and publishes more than 2,000 titles annually, in 36 languages. Both XanEdu and McGraw-Hill Higher Education provide resources that support the spectrum of scholarly study and curriculum.

Stanford said: “We are committed to giving educators digital and online resources to enhance and expand student learning. As part of that commitment, our objective is to offer the higher education community quality online resources that are directly aligned to university curriculum. Our strategic partnership with Bell & Howell’s XanEdu gives us the opportunity to offer our customers resources from the leader in quality online courseware and reference.”

As part of the agreement between the companies, McGraw-Hill will make Xan-Edu’s new CoursePack, CasePack, and LitPack products available to its faculty customers. XanEdu CoursePacks provide a total online resource to support faculty development and preparation of course materials. Aligned directly with course content, Course-Packs enable professors to create custom-ized, copyright-cleared reading materials to supplement coursework or serve as core course resources. Educators can select from hundreds of CoursePacks based on standard subject curricula, developed by XanEdu’s editorial team and subject experts.

Lew Gossage, XanEdu’s general manager, said: “We created the XanEdu Course-Pack platform to provide faculty members with state-of-the-art online selection and publishing tools. This ability to customize materials translates directly to an optimized learning experience for their students. In addition, many of our CoursePack offerings are enhanced with features made possible by sophisticated technology. For example, professors can include notes and other customized content that enriches students’ use of the materials. Teaching suggestions, discussion exercises, interpretive insights, background information, references to related materials, and relevant Internet sites also make Xan-Edu CoursePacks a far more valuable and complete course resource.” Gossage also noted that instructors value CoursePacks’ inclusion of up-to-the-minute information, copyright clearance, and ease of use.
