Blackwell Publishing Introduces New Version of Blackwell Synergy

Blackwell Publishing has announced the launch of a new version of Blackwell Synergy, its online journals service. The site has a new design and improved navigation so readers can better locate journals in their subject area and link between related articles.

Blackwell Synergy currently offers 368 Blackwell Publishing science, medicine, technology, psychology, and economics journals. This year, another 250 humanities and social science journals will be added to the service, which is a source for highly cited peer-reviewed journals published on behalf of academic and professional societies.

"We are delighted with the new-look Blackwell Synergy and all the additional functionality it offers our society partners, library customers, journal editors, authors, and readers," said René Olivieri, Blackwell Publishing CEO. "Our investment in Blackwell Synergy is a key part of our ongoing commitment to expand the readership and impact of our society journals."

Blackwell Synergy's new features include the following:

  • Journals can now be browsed by discipline and subject area.

  • QuickLink enables researchers to go directly to a particular article.

  • QuickSearch allows readers to search for keywords within one journal, all journals on Blackwell Synergy, and journals from other publishers.

  • Article reference lists now include dynamically updated CrossRef and external database links.

  • Readers can highlight a selection of article abstracts, then choose to view them all together on one page before clicking through to the full text.

  • My Synergy is a new area where registered users can administer their subscriptions, add favorite journals and articles, and set up their e-mail table of contents alerts.

  • Journal pages now include print journal jacket scans.
David Sommer, Blackwell Synergy's product manager, said: "The aim has been to improve the research experience so that journal readers can find the most relevant material for their studies in as short a time as possible. New features like QuickLink take users directly to an article reference, and the subject grouping of titles allows readers to make connections to related literature much more easily."

The new version of Blackwell Synergy was developed in collaboration with technology partner Atypon Systems. During its 4-year agreement with Blackwell Publishing, Atypon has been responsible for Blackwell Synergy content management, hosting, managed services, software support, and security.
