Enterprise Portals: Promises and Politics Deborah Henderson, IT Architect, IT Strategy and Architecture, Hydro One Networks Inc. Hydro One Networks
has more than 4,000 employees and owns and operates one of the 10 largest
electricity transmission and distribution systems in North America. In
1999 we began contemplating portals as a way to consolidate and leverage
our Web-based activities. This article discusses the nature of enterprise
portal implementations, the justification for our project, including return
on investment (ROI), and the practical process and political considerations
that will be useful to anyone embarking on a portal approach.
