Intranet Toolkit Review: Factiva Server Software 3.0
Susan Feldman and Judy Boggess, Datasearch Labs

INTRODUCTION
What would the perfect intranet toolkit look like? If we were designing a corporate intranet, we'd want a single access point to all information. We'd want information to be integrated into the daily workflow. We'd want tools that were easy for nonprogrammers to use and administer. That's what we are seeking as we test the intranet toolkits from major online vendors.

These toolkits are new products, and, as Bonnie Burwell's overview in the January/February issue pointed out, they are works in progress. The versions that we are examining are robust and are in use by corporations. However, a chat with any of the vendors makes it clear that there is a long list of improvements planned. Collaborative tools, better searching, more content, and better integration were certainly on this list for several of the toolkits. Therefore, it is important to examine the version that you will be getting, inquire about upgrades, and make sure that work that you invest will not be undone by a new release a month down the road.
