Keeping the Balance

Both global and local taxonomies are vital and a balance must be maintained. Global taxonomies are best for certain domains and uses, while local taxonomies are the better choice for others. The benefits and costs of creating and using a taxonomy globally must be weighed against the benefits and costs of creating and using a local taxonomy. Globalize as much as possible to create an underlying unification through an information system. Localize only where necessary to support context justified by user behavior and needs. Try to minimize the impact of politics in this balancing act.
