PURPOSE: This site provides information on the import and export of goods and services by state to and from countries around the world.

FEE/FREE: FREE

SOURCE CHECK: The State Trade Data service is part of the U.S. Census Bureau.

OUR VIEW: If you want to find out what commodities (via HS or NAICS codes), from coal to diamonds to chocolate to electronics, are coming into and out of states, you can view the data on simple tables on this site. You can see trends over the years and which country receives the most goods from each state. Consider this site if you want to find out what goods and services are imported and exported by each state.

PURPOSE: This site provides breaking news, business, industry, and other information from around the globe.

FEE/FREE: FREE

SOURCE CHECK: World News Network is a news service that employs 100 people in 20 countries.

OUR VIEW: This is an intriguing site because it covers so much of the globe, has specialized industry information aggregation (http://wnindustry.com), and has a very good archive search capabilities. It can be confusing to use, though, as it is hard to predict what kind of information any particular individual news and industry pages will contain. Still, as a free, searchable source of global business news, it’s worth checking out. Consider this site if you want to find recent industry, business, and general news aggregated from multiple sites around the globe.

OUR VIEW: Conducted every 5 years, the economic censuses are the authoritative collection of business and economic information from around the country. These conference presentations provide a nice, simple, top-line way to quickly get a sense of what’s included in these censuses, as well as to view actual data, presented in easy-to-grasp charts and graphs. You can choose to see presentations made within your own state, which will include your own regional data, or choose the state where the very latest presentation was performed. Consider this site if you want an easy way to view the results of the latest economic census, including data collected for your state.

SITE: Fortune 500+ App

PURPOSE : This app provides data on the 1,000 largest firms in the U.S. along with recent news, executive biographies, and other related information.

FEE/FREE: FREE; FEE-based version (with a free trial available)

SOURCE CHECK: The Fortune 500+ App is a product of CNNMoney.

OUR VIEW: If you need to get quick access to company information, especially while on-the-go, this would be a key resource. Note that the fee-based version also permits users to view any LinkedIn connections with companies and executives, as well as perform additional sorting and filtering. The application can also run on regular browsers in addition to mobile devices. Consider this site if you want to quickly find information on companies, particularly while traveling or away from your PC.

SITE: M&A Portal

CATEGORY: Mergers and Acquisitions

PURPOSE: This portal provides news, resources, and commentaries about deals on mergers and acquisitions around the globe.

FEE/FREE: FREE

SOURCE CHECK: The M&A Portal is a free spinoff version of the subscription-based Zephyr database, a product of Bureau van Dijk (BvD). BvD is a leading supplier of European and global business information. It has offices around the world and is headquartered in Brussels.

OUR VIEW: While you only get a headline and some very limited information when doing a search on this free site, it can be enough to serve as a lead to do additional research on your own. What’s nice too is that you can filter your results by deal type (e.g., acquisition, private equity, share buyback, venture capital), industry, and geographic location. You can choose how you want the results sorted and displayed as well. If you register, you can also purchase the actual report, with details on the deal, typically for about $60. Consider this site if you need to do initial basic research on mergers and acquisition deals.
